Jigsmith - an exciting Shropshire based ceilidh band

Featuring a line up of melodeon, fiddle, guitars, percussion and bass.
The band comprises players from several musical traditions -from classical and ceilidh folk to jazz and we also provide our own caller. With Jigsmith you can be assured of the very best in danceable music.
Our repertoire is mainly traditional English folk music which is performed in a contemporary style, but with a few of our own tunes thrown in for good measure and although we aim to keep the dance floor full we can also provide incidental music to further your night’s enjoyment if necessary. We will call ceilidh jigs, reels and steps as well as waltzes and some more fun items. Our caller is experienced at choosing appropriate and enjoyable ceilidh or barn dances and will do her best to suit the ability of the audience.
We believe that 'taking part and having fun' is more important than getting the dances exactly right and our main aim is for you to party and enjoy your evening.
The band originally formed way back in 2005 and have always been based in Ash village (near Shrewsbury) in North Shropshire. Jigsmith usually travel within a 40 mile radius, which takes us into Shropshire, Cheshire, North Wales and Staffordshire - however we are always happy to discuss travelling further afield.
All of our electrical equipment is PAT tested to comply with current health and safety legislation, and we also have public liability insurance through EDFSS.
We have sound-systems suitable for small room, large hall or even outdoor events and our sound equipment is often used by the North Shropshire Folk club for their events.
You will hear ceilidhs described as barn dances, ceilis, kabyles, hoedowns, or sometimes as English country dances. Participants have been known to dress up in cowboy gear or kilts, although it is more common to turn up in something more casual.
Ceilidhs are very much a social occasion and through the course of an evening you may have danced with every person in the room! The dances don't need any complicated steps and can be walked through if you are feeling less energetic. We are more than happy for young children or wheelchair users to take part as long as space permits - and we often find that this happens.
if you were concerned that maybe a ceilidh would be too difficult for your party, there is nothing to worry about as our caller will tailor the dances to suit.
Finally, if you are also planning on having a disco at your event we recommend that you have the ceilidh first (especially if there will be alcohol) as it makes for a far more enjoyable evening if people are not too tired.
Take a look at our gigs page for details of up-coming public ceilidh dances, and also our Facebook page using the link at the bottom of this page where you can find more information about our ceilidh band.

Myself and my husband got married this July and after watching some great youtube videos we decided to pick Jigsmith as our wedding band. In the final run-up to the wedding, we worried about just about everything, including whether the band would be any good, but I have to say this was un-needed as Jigsmith were incredible.
The band arrived and were the loveliest group of people, and when they set up and started playing we were thrilled to find their music was wonderful too.
Our wedding party had the best time following their ceilidh and the instructor was a lovely chap with a great sense of humour (also very patient as a couple of our crowd had had a few too many beers..).
All in all, we couldn't recommend this band enough- lovely people and a great sound, we'll definitely be following their gig list to see them again in future! Thanks,
Hannah & Dafydd
Hi Mandy
We would like to thank the members of "Jigsmith" for their performance at our Silver Wedding celebrations. We appreciated their enthusiasm, friendliness and patience when dealing with our attempts at the dances. Everyone in the room said how much they enjoyed the music. I think that the band's encouragement and support got more people on the dance floor than I had expected and the more involved people were the more they seemed to enjoy themselves. My daughter has already said that she wants the band to play at her wedding (but I hope that that may be some time off yet). So please pass on our very warm wishes to each of the band members and thank them again on our behalf.
Kind regards
Graham and Nina Scott
